He served as the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, but his historical significance cannot be contained within any single state or religious community. Through his strategic vision, ideological consistency, and absolute refusal to accommodate imperial order-making, he contributed fundamentally to the consolidation and organization of the Moqawama (Resistance) as one of the most powerful, indigenous, and popular fronts against imperialism and settler-colonialism in our era. It is precisely through this enduring legacy that he stood, in the fullest sense, as one of the leaders of global anti-colonial resistance—offering a blueprint for self-determination that resonates across the Global South far beyond the borders of the region or the Muslim world.

Seyyed Ali Khamenei came of age inside an epoch-making revolution—one that consciously inherited the rich traditions, sacrifices, and inspirations of all anti-colonial movements through global history. He was forged in the crucible of a movement that dared to declare the wretched of the earth have the right to govern themselves. For thirty-five years, he led a nation that the most powerful imperialist state on earth sought to break—through war, through sanctions, through assassination, through manufactured crisis—and he did not yield. He entered leadership as a revolutionary and departed the same way.

In his thought, those who impose inequality upon the world stand in defiance of God, and therefore every believer carries an obligation to resist them. For him, the struggle against domination was inseparable from theological commitment. The reach of his anti-imperialism, rooted in the Quranic concept of Istikbar—the arrogance of power—cuts across nation, religion, and class. Grounded in rigorous historical analysis, he named the United States as the most concrete and present embodiment of istikbar in our era.

He argued that peripheral societies should not allow colonialism to be forgotten; its history, wounds, and enduring structures must remain the bedrock of popular consciousness. For him, the struggle against domination was inseparable from the struggle for development, since the chief instrument of imperial power is the deliberate underdevelopment of subjugated peoples. He taught us that colonialism, in its latest phase, no longer operates primarily through direct occupation; it operates through the systematic elimination of national sovereignties and dismantling the political and economic autonomy of peripheral societies. He was equally a trenchant critic of Western liberal ideology, exposing human rights, democracy, and freedom as ideological cover for the expansion of (neo)colonialism.

Under his guidance, Iran absorbed the full violence of imperial punishment and did not break. It endured the longest and most comprehensive sanctions regime imposed on any nation in modern history, while advancing in missile technology, medical science, nanotechnology, and nuclear industry. He repeatedly stated that the United States ultimately wanted the total absorption of Iran into the US-led orbit of global capital—its sovereignty consumed, its resources opened, its independence dissolved. Their goal was never negotiation and coexistence. He insisted that diplomatic arrangements offered by the dominant powers were stage-setting, not genuine engagement, and that imperial states have never—and will never—accept a relationship of equals in international affairs. He taught us, with unflinching clarity, that for a people living under domination, the cost of surrender is always greater than the cost of resistance.

While many states in the region submitted—normalization dressed as pragmatism, capitulation dressed as diplomacy—he refused. He revitalized the phrase Hayhat minna al-Dhilla—“how far is humiliation from us.” These are the words of Imam Hussein on the plains of Karbala, and the anthem of every people choosing martyrdom over submission. Recognizing that the impulse to resist is inherently indigenous to oppressed nations, he worked tirelessly with a clear, overarching vision to help build, arm, and consolidate a united front. Through decades of diligent strategic coordination, this shared vision bound together the popular forces of Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. It became a formidable belt of popular and armed resistances encircling the Zionist settler regime—the colonial core implanted in the heart of West Asia. Through this collective ecosystem, the Muqawama expanded into a civilizational project that exposed the limits of the world’s most powerful military apparatus when confronted with the organized, conscious will of resisting peoples. So has the Muqawama contributed directly to the unraveling of the US-led imperial order.

His departure does not end but renew the Nahdat—the movement of resistance. The history of anti-colonial struggle teaches us that the blood of leaders who refuse to submit does not drain into the earth—it rises. The Iranian Revolution of 1979 was built upon the martyrdoms of those who came before, and no one understood this chain more deeply than Ayatollah Khamenei—for he was not merely its inheritor, but a living link forged within it. Iran’s unyielding stance against the relentless US-led imperialist and Zionist assault stands as a testament to this legacy, serving as a beacon of revolutionary inspiration for the entire world of the oppressed. This ultimate sacrifice galvanizes the resistance forces, reminds Iran and the broader front of what they are fighting for, and places before the world the simple, unsparing truth that there are things worth dying for, and that a people who carry this knowledge cannot ultimately be defeated.

He will remain, as Imam Hussein has remained, as a flame to be carried. No nation, no people, no generation shall accept humiliation in silence. The path of the leader does not end here. It runs forward—and we, the undersigned, commit to walking it.

هیهات منا الذلة

This tribute letter has been collaboratively prepared by the Center for Resistance, Sovereignty, and Development Studies (MOHAAT), Republic’s Paper Magazine and Solidarity Iran in Tehran.

Add Your Signature

Seyyed Ali Khamenei passed as he had lived: in direct confrontation with the forces of imperial domination, undefeated in will, uncompromised by pressure.
